It takes just two flying termites (a male and a female) to start a colony of termites, however they swam around in thousands and may enter through cracks and holes within a house. It is advisable to keep the lights off at home when flying termites season are around-you can do this for rooms or places where termites are most attracted in your home, the use of a bug zapper is also an effective way of catching flying termites at home.
Flying termites are a caste of termite that doesn't eat any wood, but they can migrate up the mud tubes made by the worker termite and wait for the ideal weather condition such as low temperature and moisture to mate. Once the termites swarm, they normally return to the soil within 48 hours. The swammers may remain in the soil but not as active as the worker and soldier termites. The workers and soldiers will remain all year long and continue to eat the wood materials.
Flying termites are not a sign of wood infestation within an environment, they only give a sign that some colonies of termites are existing somewhere nearby, flying termites do not destroy wood, they can only increase the size or a termite colony or start new colonies. A total eradication of flying insects from an environment may prevent the multiplication of termite colonies as well as the production of aggressive termite workers and soldiers that will cause wood damages.
