You need to grade and make sloppy soil materials that may come in contact with wood. This ensure that surface water can easily drain away from the building woods. Apart from these, The presence of cellulose in woods, papers and other material serve as a quick source of food to termites. When these materials come in contact with the soil, they will serve as a source of food for termites to grow, hence you need to maintain a distance between building wood foundation and the soil. Ensure that those parts of the building such as window frames and porch steps have a safe distance from the soil (separate these wooden structures at least 5 inches away from the soil).
There are also exist some natural biological control agents in the soil that destroy termites. Parasitic Roundworms that are also known as Nematodes kill and destroy termites . This type of control has been used by laboratorists but it is limited and subjected to field conditions. Some types of soil are not favorable for Nematodes to operate and termites have device means of recognizing Nematodes and their actions, hence this type of control is unreliable.
Termites activities can also be controlled by the use of biological termicides that are also known as "Metarhizium anisopliae". This is a biologically modified fungus that helps fight off termites but it can only be applied above the ground on termite infested areas. The fungus should be sprayed on all the foraging termites in colonies, these termites can even spread the fungus on other nest mates thereby allowing the treatment to spread as quickly as possible. The fungal spores will die along the hundreds or thousands of termites thereby having a long lasting residual effect. The fungus spray should sprayed in a professional manner, otherwise the termite control might not be effective. It is advisable to spray the termite from their base and from the edge towards the center of the colony, this will allow the fungi spray to reach every angle of the colony.
The fungi acts on the termites by eating them up slowly by forming spores on them. The termites carry these spores around and when the pain becomes unbearable for the termites, they will die. When the fungi spores as well does not have anything to feed on, they die along with the termites. The spores can only act on only the Termites they come in contact with, hence it is advisable to spread the biological fungi properly. It is recommended that a professional do the spraying for a long lasting and effective Termite Control.
